Well its time to start the restoration. My bug has gone from this to this I attemped to take the doors off this evening which I thought would be straight forward as they are bolts with screw heads but non of them would budge anyone have any idea how to get them off? Once they are off then the paint stripping will begin before it is delivered to Lee in Farnham

You will need an impact screwdriver Herman. You clout the end of it with a hammer, the jolt and twist frees the crug and paint. Mine is at work, on a 2 week holly poos. If you call at S.A.S at provisional works off the Avenue Starbeck. They are not all that dear and will come in handy for all seized screws. I have used it for allen cap screws and slot pan heads also posi type. They are ace at freeing siezed countersunk screws. Also useful for undoing siezed brake drum retaining screws. Main tip is the screw bit has to be a good fit. Lilly looks really solid. A nice looking car, Not seen it for ages.

Cheers Steve will get one from sas and get those doors off. it is a very solid car and I've decided that I want it restoring the right way without cutting any corners so that it will remain a solid car for another 40 odd years

Lilly certainly does look solid - especially when I think about what state Vera was in to begin with. She has just been resprayed so hopefully she will finally make it to the October meet. Just needs a bit of Waxoyl to keep her solid now and the electrics sorted after the respray, a few teething problems with lights and idicators.

Hermann
Soak each bolt on the door pillar with penetrating oil and leave it for 24 hours then use the impact driver, smack the head of the driver against the phillips head of the screw very hard making sure, as Steve says, that the posidrive head of the impact driver is the CORRECT size for the screw head, this should then enable you to release each screw without the HORROR of chewing up the heads otherwise you will be in real bother!!!
By the way......why have you named your car after June's Karmann Kab.......especially since its BLUE!!!! would have thought BLUEY was a better name!!!!

Cheers, it is solid would have probably gone for another few years without new paint but there is some rot on the side and bottom of the heater channels. the heater channels themselves are 5 years old and are good but the ownr before me used filler on the side and bottom hence why its rotted. the olny other rot is spare wheel well which will also be taken care of I look forward to seeing vera and all the hard work you've put into her

Anyone know how to strip the doors down? I'm having difficulty taking the door cards off without bending them. Its the door handle and window winder handle thats holding it on.

The handles are held on with roll pins. You will need a pin punch Herman. Crush the plastic washer into the door and you will see the pin located at the base of the handle. Punch it through, make sure you are square on the pin then the impact will be pushing and not bending.Good Luck. Regards, Steve.
