Hi, can u help? My 6v bug keeps cutting out / stalling when its idoling say in neutral at the lights. This can be a real pain. any suggestions as to why it happens and how it can be remedied? The red dynamo light keeps coming on at low revs too. Thanks...

Hi. 1st its normal for the red light to go on during low revs. 2nd the problem you have is very common happens to my bug when its cold in the winter (below 10 degrees) it stalls when ever i stop at lights etc but runs fine when warm. the problem is carbon build up in the inlet manifold. I dont think you can get hold of a new 1200 inlet manifold (if yours is 1200) otherwise there are new ones from vw heritage for 1500, 1600 etc. or you could take the manifold off and clean out all the carbon. this problem does not really bother me as i'm not using my bug during the winter hope that helps

I would adjust your fan dynamo to crank belt (Add a washer to the pulley, that should cure it.
Cutting out, it is carbon but it could also be an Air/fuel mixture problem, I would try enriching your fuel slightly by adjusting the mixture at the carb, take your plugs out and clean same and adjust the gap and finally adjust, very very slightly, your distributor to rev higher at idle, that should all help....and of course what Hermann has suggested.

hello... just thought i'd butt in ;D Both my bugs hate the winter, I tried eveything on Geoffrey to stop him stalling (in the 1st 10 mins) to no avail including getting him fixed up with one of those manifold jacket things... might as well used a banana skin. Phoebe's the same...although maybe not quite so bad, the worst thing is when you've got to stop and start cause of traffic, I've had to bump start soo many times and I hate it but i've come to find that this is just one of those beetle things and there ain't nothing I can do about it. Roll on Summer...

I thought of getting one of those jackets cant remember the name think it was IM.. something.
have you thought of taking your manifold off and flushing it out?
It seems to only be a problem when the temp is below 10 degrees.
