hi everyone, seasons's greetings and stuff. I have a troublesome starter motor and i'm told a clout with a hammer will help. So, as a novice where should I be clouting?
also if anyone can recommend a decent hg1 based mechanic willing to fit a new one, let me know
cheers

It's not really accessable to be clouting it with a hammer and if you're having to do that it's proabaly kna**ered anyway. One little trick you could do if it fails, is to put the vehicle in gear and rock it forwards and back a little - this might be just enough to get the 'circuit' made again. I had one that had a habit of not working after a long motorway journey - no cure, just changed it. It's not too much of a job to get out, just a little inaccessable. A few wires and two 17mm bolts (I think, or 15mm ??) One bolt you gat at from underneath - one from inside the engine bay.
if you do have a go yourself -disconnect the battery first as one of the wires is a permanent live.

What is this Starter Motor fitted to, what are its symptoms?

nothing happening when the ignition key is turned. Oil and battery lights are ok, and power in the battery, just no hint of the starter turning

Ok...do you have a voltmeter and do you have the manual with the wiring diagram? it sounds like the ignition switch is either in fault or the starter motor coil, you will have to trace the wire to the starter motor coil to see if it is energising when you attempt to start.
