Okay, I was well p!ssed of last Saterday when i finished at 7pm on the Beelte .......here is what happend! For a while now my Red light was on...and I been charging the battery with a charger every few days, so i desided that it was about time to do somethhing about it. I gone to Hick motor parts shop and got my self a brand new regulater and changed that first, but Red light was still on, So, back to hick motor parts shop and 2 new brushes for the dynamo, well I changed them and ...no...still Red light on...! Again back to Hick motor part shop and this time I got the big money out, a new Dynamo was ordered...so...! last Saterday I dropped the engine out of the Beetle , what is a lot harder then a Splitty, got the doghouse of and changed all the stuff from my old dynamo to the new one...! Quess you already know whats coming, got the engine back in the Beetle at around 6.30pm and fired it up...to my surprise RED LIGHT still on.......aaaaaaarg! So...what can be the problem, faulty regulator, faulty Dynamo, I give up, every think is brand new! HELP...

Sounds like a short circuit (to earth).
Test it a step at a time, Dynamo to Regulator, Regulator to Warning light.....etc

Certainly it seems a wiring fault. If the dynamo is kicking out voltage it provides an additional feed to the ignition bulb which collapses the circuit by 'cancelling' the battery feed. A fault find is to disconnect the feed from Dynamo charge circuit and run an external feed. The problem is if you're unsure of cable runs and feeds then you can create more problems, worse still create electric fires. Although I am not the good example, sometimes rather than throwing dosh at it, get York autoelectrics to check it out? may not be a good DIY. If you still retrofit then dig out ins. policy. Take it safe Alex dude.

Thanks Stooge, think I play it safe and let the experts look at it. I had the same problem, having to change over batteries every two days and forever charging up The red light was on constantly. I had to have the commutator in the dynamo re-wound with new copper wire - tis working perfectly now. I had bought a new regulator aswell thinking that was the problem but the problem was in the dynamo itself. Hope you get it sorted at Hick's

Ps dont dynamos need re polarizing or something? SPOT ON Took it to Hick and after some ooh and aahing , I got back to work and he rang me 1 hour later that it was sorted, Re-polarizing it was. Had to activate the magnetic fields in the dynamo again with a spare battery.......sure, dint charge me becouse I bought the Dynamo at his shop 2 weeks ago re-conditioned! No its making a funny blowing noise....... its never right is it. Will investigate and will ask for advise again on here first. Thanks. Alex.
