Posted from an email I recieved
Hi
My name is Babbs and I have a 61 Beetle. I have had the Link Pins and King Pins put in to pass MOT. But now its really stiff on the steering and if I hit a pothole the whole car will skate across the road. I have noticed that it is getting slightly better. But now Im nervous to drive it, which is such a waist for this beautiful beast. There are new shocks in the back but not the front. PLEASE HELP ME, I love my splitscreen conversion, and want to drive her confidantly again, she's such a head turner.
Yours truely Babbs

I would recommend taking your car to DubTricks and get them to check it out

Sounds like the steering box needs some adjustment

Definately the steering box (they were boxes on earlier bugs post 75), I would reccomend that the toe in/out alignment checks are also carried out to reduce camber

If your steering box is the original one and the problem has developed after the new King pins were fitted then it sounds like the pins are binding in the Bush's. Instead of free swivel, the steering box has to overcome the drag of extra friction turning the pins. The steering will then get easier as the pins become 'slacker' in the tight Bush's as a result of maneuvering the vehicle. The steering geometry 'castor' effect will be effected. The forward motion that pulls the wheels straight and centers the steering ( the shopping trolley effect. Unless its one from an unnamed supermarket). The drag of the wheels not realigning will cause steering problems after bends etc. Don't buy anything until you have checked for this possible problem. The steering drag link arm will need to be disconnected, then the wheels should swivel freely when jacked up. If there is excessive pressure required then the pins may well be binding in new Bush's.

Ok, I will get Roy to have a look at all you wrote. I now that he will know exactly what you mean. Actually now that I have read it a couple of times it makes sense. (The problem only started when the link and King pins went in,) when going round a corner to pull back into a normal line, it can be hard work as to not to over compensate it, to get it into that driving line. The actual steering wheel has say about 2 to 3inch loose play, then its like turning a tank. Then coupled with the skating on ice when hitting a pothole...well thats hard work and scary when your not expecting it. Thanks ever so much for your help. B
