Thought I would use the excuse of the bad weather to-day to have some time with the resto, all them small niggly jobs that needed closing out with some patience so here is the days work (I am not slow, just very patient!!) Here is a shot of how the wings are getting the trafficators and new loom repair patches fitted along with the headlight drain tubes, new fixing assemblies and the grommets with repair patch wiring to loom. Here is the Hella H4 headlight and genuine Rim fitted as a completed assembly, I thought it looked so nice so here is a side shot of it ready to fit to the body, but will have to blather the underside of the wings before they go on with waxoil, not forgetting the chem grease for all those bolts . The bonnet and boot lid now all built up with the correct seals and trims, looks a real treat at this stage. Now THIS was a challenge, stripped down the whole wiper assembly, stripped the motor, blasted and repainted same (looks as good as new), stripped all the seals and bearings, regreased and built up again, renewed all the seals, stripped out the fan, slotted it home, fought with it for a while to get it all lined up just right, banged the fan motor back on to its anti vibration mounts, lined it up and re-fitted the seal.........bingo, looks like it did when it left the factory!!! Here is the shot with the wiper assembly fitted, all body seals assembeled and wiper shafts secured ready to take the new wiper arms and blades. Got the tank fitted and aligned, routed the speedo cable and hood latch cable, re-tapped all the fixing points to take the 10mm SS bolts and washers and tank seal, closed my eyes and preyed it would go in first time.........and it did..........as you can see, now that looks a treat, even to my eyes. Here is the whole thing ready to be closed up with the closure plate, sound as a pound. NEXT JOB..........Complete the bonnet seal!!!!!! cos it spoils the pics ;D.

Looking lovely Derek, you have a gift! I found this pic of a recently restored cab of a similar age to June's that was on show at the Big Summer Bender last summer. This was a lovely example....... Not that you need any inspiration...

That is a nice early example, the problem with the earlier cars was the "Shimmy's" and all things front end.........they shook like buggery over 40mph!!!........

Cheers Mick.........Its great to do a project, its amazing what you remember having done it many years ago!!!.........loads and loads of things to do though and its better than sitting in front of the telly slowly withering away, keeps me so busy and the sourcing of the bits is where a lot of the time is spent, once its finished I have promised to do a full article of the Resto for the Karmann Cabriolet Club and also out of interest for people on VZI along with a "How To" based at least on my experiences of the bar steward bits.
I would reccomend this therapy for anyone and I am always willing to assist and help anyone who needs a helping hand, no matter how small or large the issue, if I can help at all that is
Keep enjoying the pics......thats what they are for.........interest for everyone.
Right.........whats next then

Such a miserable morning so I thought a couple of hours trying to get my head round the next task wouldn't do any harm.....how wrong I was, more like 6 hours..........here goes the LOOM........ Here is the wiring diagram all marked up and ready to go, you can just see my scribbles for where all the relay and switch connections go, this took a few hours just researching the manual and figuring out what will be redundant on the loom as the engine is no longer fuel injected. Got the loom out of the crate.....oh well, better late than never, first spread it out to get the orientation right (thats Front and Back to you and me!!), work out the best routing and how to bed it in to each part of the body to make iteasier for the interior to fit. First route is along the rear wing aperture, break out the route so it meets the battery tray and to the interposing relay behind the rear bulkhead, slot it through the bulkhead and tidy up the grommet, fix it to the body with the metal tabs just so its concealed ready for the soundproofing and carpets. Here is another shot as it comes through the rear bulkhead ready to route throughout the engine bay (The wiring will be temporarily tie wrapped until the engine goes in to determine the safest routing. Here is a shot of the front end with the fuse/relay box secured to the front bulkhead. The next job is to route through the door pillars for the door switches, interior light, front lights and trafficatorsand finally the horn, then to label up and route ready for the dashboard fitment, Thought I would connect all the switches ready to slot in the dashboard......more to follow as the front screen and seal gets fitted and then the dashboard glove box repair for the bonnet handle mechanism and then it should be ready to take the dashboard..............now that would be progress.

Its all go now.......carrying out the final checks on the body pan before the body goes on THIS WEEK.........Thursday is the day, here is hoping it all goes to plan Had a set back on the front struts at the week end, one of them has a hair line fracture and when the gas insert slotted in the fracture began to open up.........trying to get hold of a couple of front strut holders at this late stage is a BIG problem.....looks like the body will have to go on the pan and retrofit the struts later which is NOT what I wanted to do......at least I know I can obtain a couple in the states but that will set me back at least three weeks due to delivery. Here are some close up of the closing shots for the front and rear heater cable conduits and guide tubes, sodden in release fluid so they will hopefully never stick again. Here is the Front Here is the Rear The final alignment checks have been done to the gearbox and drive shafts, here is a shot of the nearside all closed up and aligned. Here is a shot of the offside gearbox and drive shaft after final inspection and ready to be closed up. Here is a shot of the front end with the anti roll bar fitted and the two new disc brakes and calipers set up on the ball joints, this is where he front struts would have been fitted but that will have to wait for retro fitting with the body on the pan.

Well to-day was the day to end all days...............the Body went on the pan and the doors got hung and the winder mechanisms fitted, now if you haven't ever fitted a body on to a pan before let me tell you it takes 4 people just to lift it and an age to line it all up, it was a very long day, started at 7 this morning and finished at 7.30 to-night so this is all hot off the press...so to speak, enjoy Doesn't look like a lot of work but I hit a lot of problems, all of which take so much tme but at least most are now resolved. Next tasks are to fit all the seals to the windows, fit the quarter lights, fit the frames to the doors and rear wings, fit windscreen, interior mirror etc. Fit Struts, finish off brake pipes, fit sterring rack, line up steering column to rack and align, fit dashboard, fit stalks etc, fit fuel tank and run pipiing, run piping from brake fluid holder to master cylinder, run piping from fuel tank to engine bay, fit facet fuel pump and wire to sensors, complete loom wiring and test, fit wings and test lighting, indicators, stop lights etc. Target date for trimmers end of March 07. Block ordered for engine along with crank, pistons, heads etc, build up engine & tinware while car is at upholsters. Due back end of May...........keep looking

Body on the pan is in a different workshop as it took 4 of us to get the body on the pan and we needed more room than I had in the unit, now its on the pan and on casters it gets wheeled back in to my unit for completing on Saturday.
Must admit though the floor on the unit is clean....just feels better and its a state of mind, I work much better in less clutter, some don't have that opportunity though and have to make do with whatever, but I DID change a clutch in a mini BY THE ROADSIDE with 4 house bricks and a knackered old spanner some years back.
I got confirmation that the final bits are at long last on the way from California (Chucks Convertibles and Topline) ashould be here next Friday, got some secondhand struts from Derby and off to pick them up on Sat morning....then a week to refurb them.

Here are some shots of the front of the floor pan ready to take the refurbished front struts and running the brake lines across the nose to the master cylinder and each flexible brake line, then in with the steering rack and steering column, hope it all lines up nice and square....thought I would also try the "One Key Fits All" and sure enough, that key from the factory still works, how cool is that. img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/keredewor/Karmann%20Kab/karmanncab141.jpg[/IMG]I think this shot of "One keys Fits Em all" just says it is all worthwhile, still a long way to go though but it feels like its getting closer...oh and the door "Will" drop and line up once the seals are fitted Sorted the Cabrio Roof components....now these are like "Rocking Horse Doo Da's", got them all blinged up, recoated, banged up and identified ready for the trimmer (He has his own box of bits you see) Thought I would take a shot of the ghostly image without the ghosts....all ready to take the "Dashboard" now this IS going to be difficult Lots more to follow.....enjoy

Update from saturday mornings work on the Wiring Loom and Dashboard, this was a pig to get in correctly, but at least its now in, the interior light has been wired back to each door pillar switch, all the warning lights on the clock have been hard wire checked through the loom to each sensor and all functioned ok, the wiper motor has been tested for both speeds along with the fan fresh air blower, the hazards have been tested through the relay and all lighting hard wire checked ready for installation..........quite a lot done really.....just waiting on a few parts from Chucks Convertibles like the glove box hard wire to the bonnet catch and a few more closure items. Here is a pic of the dashboard now mounted in the car, the wiring will be cleared up and loomed back once the final items have been connected. The "You'll never get hold of NOS Hella rear lights Mate" ;D.......arrived this morning so I thought I would end the mornings work by seeing how they look on the rear wings, I especially like the black seal against the pepper white....nice
More to follow.....enjoy
