Alfie my 71 beetle has failed its mot, so im gona take him off the road for a while . now do i buy two haynes manuals because hes a 1300 model with a 1600 engine, or are there better, tried and tested manuals that can help a novice like me strip him down and more inportantly put him back together, better than before. any hints and tips gratefully needed. thanks in advance.

Hi Robert. amongst the v dub stuff on my bookshelf is this; 'How to keep your volkswagen alive'. Its a very lighthearted manual to step by step procedures for the complete idiot. This is in the book title and I have found it a handy overview when the Haynes stuff gets a bit intense. The book is by John Muir. Try Amazon books. Sit down and work your way through it with a brew of tea and some plain digestives. You may need to keep the kettle on mind

i second that, my first car is a 1300 beetle, and for all youre engine, suspension, gearbox and maintenance need john muirs book is excellant, im 17 and ive managed to set my valves, points, timing, change plugs change oil, everythig for servicing as well as advice on strange noises, not starting etc

Sit down and work your way through it with a brew of tea and some plain digestives. You may need to keep the kettle on mind Not sure about the plain digestives I would always recommend chocolate ones ;D I've only seen glimpses of this book, but from what i've seen it looks the doggies.

If i remember correctly it was on amazon for about £20 when i looked last year, as i had been given the same recommendation. I picked my copy up from ebay for under a tenner delivered.
