had a replacement 'pancake' style air filter for my beetle knocking about in garage for a while, so decided to get out the tools and fit it to my 1600 tp bus engine (beetle still half way through resto ). as your probably aware, they fit on dead easy, so when completed, took it out for a spin and noticed that when accelerating (at low revs) it is spluttering and poping a bit, but drives through this and then, as always, runs great. now the camper aint been out for about a week or more, and its bloody cold out there, so...... does something need adjusting for air/fuel mixture or would it be just coz it was cold and not up to temperature?? any help greatfully recieved. cheers, karl.

mixture combined with incorrect filter = lean when cold/insufficient air = misfiring, when warm the fuel is generally rich, if you remove a plug have a look at it's colour, if its light at the electrode the diagnosis is correct
personally I run all air cooled engines slightly on the rich side, it aids engine longevity.
hope that helps
