Hi Karen, Thats bad news, you shouldn't lose power if the regulator goes or the alternater. We had the same problem, the generator packed up on us, when we were in Ireland, the only problem we had was the batteries wern't getting charged but we had our battery charger with us so could charge it up through the hook up. Could it be a problem with the coil? I'm not sure though only guessing. Hope you get sorted for the camping weekend, looking forward to it and to Terry's surprise ;D
Cheers Mick

Hi Kaz and Terry,
Are you having power loss in electric power or engine performance?
If your having engine performance power loss if you have points in you dizzy then the gap setting may be closing up so you need to be re set it.
Let us know
Simon

Hi we heard a bang which sounded like a backfire, we thought it was a bit of muck in the engin blowing out but then it started to stutter then the power went the dash lights went first . The leisure battery was ok but it wouldnt start up on that ,when we flicked the switch over, it only started with the spare battery. hope this helps trying to get it sorted for camping wk end. would the alternator make a noise when they go ?

Bang = Backfiring = Timing(GenerallY) = Loss of Power
Does it run? and if so is it running "Lumpy" on the engine mounts, if so it could also be a duff plug, try cylinder number 3 first, check you get exactly the same reach plugs (Part number is on side of the plug)

haha i think ive proberly exhausted them they recovered us half way through our hols,put us in a hotel for three nights while the van was being fixed, then recovered us again on the way home with this problem. the first problem was the sump plug had dropped out ( dont ask how cos they were baffled) so we lost all our oil, that problem has been sorted now for this one. oh the joys of vw lol
