Any words of advice/ information to help on the below. I have replaced all fuel pipes in the last few months as I can smell fuel sometimes when I open the sliding door, and the smell coming from the air vents when I stop the engine is this normal? I'm not sure if it's aleways smelt alittle after switch the engine off? There is no leaks on the pipes so I need to remove the engine and take a look at the fuel tank, but does anyone know how to remove the metal sheild between the engine and the tank? Also can you buy new fuel tanks for the early bay as I tried to search for one with not much success. Just a thought but could the smell be from the Carb as it's when the engine stops. any thought's or advice welcome Cheers Simon PS Have a great new year people!!!! ;D

Simon
No smell of fuel in the cab is "Normal" it could be a number of things.
Smell from the heating vent is generally due to heat exchangers corrosion, I would check that first, do you also have twin carbs (No Chokes), this means you will always run rich, that richness, combined with faulty heat exchangers gives excessive fuel .
I would try and buy NOS from VAG for the Heat Exchangers, the repro ones are crap.
Fuel tank removal is very easy but it is an engine out, the perforated metal shield between the engine bay and passengers rear load area just clips in to slots.
You can get your tank repaired (Stripped & re-coated) for about £100, I have some details somewhere of a company in Leeds that does it, I will try and dig them out, let me know if you need them before I rummage.

Our Bay used to stink of petrol between 3/4 full and half tank! Never smelt above or below that!! Very weird.... People always used to ask why me and the misses were always smiling and giggling everywhere we drove!!

Thanks Derek, I have NOS new heat exchangers on the drivers side but Rep on near side - Sam's side ( my side warmer ) couldn't get hold of a NOS one at the time I replaced them early last year. I don't have twin carbs, I can't see any leakage around the carb but it could be evapourating. Just don't like to think there could be a petrol leak somewhere. I will take the engine out in the next week or so and then I can take a look at the petrol tank and see if it's rusted through etc When the van had been standing for a while I noticed a slight fuel smell in the van when I opened the sliding door. so i think it must be the tank? Need to find out what's causing it ASAP as I'm not feeling great about driving it like it. keep you posted Simon

I drove to newcastle just before christmas and there ws a strong petrol smell when ever i had the heat exchangers on, so the whole trip. opened the deck lid at the other end nd there was a leak in the pipe between the fuel filter and the single carb. If there is a constant leak, i think you'd notice it.
Hope all goes well
