Don't know if anyone can help... or knows of anyone with watercooled experience... My Golf is sick, has been to mechanics twice, auto electrician and now it's back at mechanics. No one can find a fault.
The problem is this, the engine cuts out. The oil light flashes, revs drop really quickly - have to stop and try and re start the engine.
This appears to be a really common problem with mk3's - have looked on other forums - most solutions seem to include exchanging ecu relays or crank shaft sensor - these have been done - no change.
Any help or contacts would be gratefully received! email is rich.linford@fireflyuk.net

Sent contact no. as promised Rich. Give him a ring, Good Luck, i hope you can resolve the problem soon. Got a few of our own that are dragging. Fuel problems with Justin's split (still) Got a new fuel tank now so that will cure the crap in line problems. Justin is renewing pipes and fitting new pump. Twin carbs need balancing. Lotty the bay still cooks, got timing issues. Just bought long awaited garage. Better than scrabbling in yard. We got motors spread all over . Could do with a d**n fine Lock-up like Dereks.

Cheers Stooge! Just checked emails also, will give chap a ring tomorrow! Car is with mechanics we know, but they are struggling! And as funds are tight can't just go swapping all sorts in the hope that we may find something! Which is frustrating to say the least ... Will let you know what happens. Hope your troubles are just a momentary 'blip' and you get truckin soon!

I had a similar fault with a MK2 golf. But it would only do it when slowing down for lights or over a bump in the road. It was the ignition relay, what happened was the coil in the relay became week, so when the engine revs were down (so reduced current in the relay coil) or a bump jolting the cars fuse/relay box. The car would cut out, but then start again on the turn of the key. £8 at VW sorted it after I got a new relay.
Ps VW said this would never happen and it was a ECU related fault, well once replaced it never did it again.

Cheers chriswizz - cars is at mechanics now with a list of things to check through including: ecu relay, fuel relay, Coil, crankshaft sender, oil sender, timing belt, etc etc... will ring asking them to add ignition relay too, as the car does want to stall when coming to a stop! This is driving me crazy, car has been off the raod for two weeks now! Thanks again.

Bit of an update... Cutting out seems to be down to a faulty ignition relay, driven around 100 miles this weekend and the engine didn't stop once! Is still a bit lumpy when not accelerating and likes to try to stall when putting clutch in when pulling up to stop. Changed the induction kit back to standard air intake - bit smoother but still not too happy....

Could it be the air flow meter? They do go wrong from time to time, I have a mk2 spare. But I think they are different Its funny how the normal air box has improved the situation. good luck

I'm hoping it isn't as it's over £100 - just paid out for 3 weeks work.... But would make sense if the fuel air mix is not right. Funny thing with the air filter - was convinced when i put the K&N one on that it made the car quick as... Put the standard one back on and doesn't seem to be any slower?!

I think it is just the induction noise that makes it sound quicker, I actually found on my mk2's it helped at higher end speeds, that was with a full s/s exhaust system though. I never put one on my mk3. So dont know what result you will get. May be worth checking evil-bay or edition38 forum to try to get a flow meter on the cheep. But if its the same as the mk 2 I have got one you can have, but I dont think it is.

Bad luck continues as exhaust blew on Pool Bank this morning man it's loud! So that list is now: 1)Hit by kid in car park - scratched bumper 2)Wing mirror stolen 3)3 weeks in garage to find electrical fault 4)air flow meter required 5)exhaust now wakes the dead in Australia All since mid December... When will it end? !!!!!!!

Stick in there. I had lots of problems with a mk2 golf I had, allsorts went wrong, even ended up with a bent conrod at one point, dont ask me how! That needed a new engine.
This engine was fine untill the head gasket went...........this would not normaly be a problem but I was at the 1997 GTi treffen in Barlo Holland! But it got me home.
In the end I had that car from 1996-2003 it did 175000, and looking back it was a great car.
I have been playing with VW's for 11 years, take the rough with the smooth. It will all be worth it when its running sweet.
The air flow meter I have is off a digifant mk2 GTi, The numbers are...
Bosch 0 280202106 VW Audi 037906301
Hope its right

Thanks for looking

Good news! a liberal spray of carb cleaner up the air intake has cured the Golf's need to stall before stopping! Yay! i almost like it again! Just need to get wheel bearing changed this week, then paint bits and it'll be back to normal!
