Hi folks, been lurking here a while, and not yet made it to any of your meetings, but I will.
I've got a 79 Westy in need of some paint on the fibreglass roof. I've got a compressor and spray gun but previous attempts to spray a whole camper were pretty rubbish, and I don't want to mess up again. I had considered using some Tekaloid with a roller, but know that in time I'll wish I'd sprayed it.
Is there somebody near to York who can guide me through what I need to do?

Hmm....Fibreglass roofs require (I think) need a special Gel paint due to the "Flexing" of the roof but you can easily do it yourself but NOT at this time of year in this humidity. If you go on www.samba.com and search for painting pop top roofs the site has loads of self help tips. If you have not painted before probably the most important aspect of painting are:- Humidity Clean vented area Adequate masking Preperation of the area to be painted (Rubbed down and well prepared) Good undercoat and well bonded/dried Apply coats evenly and lightly about 12/18" away from area being sprayed Allow 15 mins between each application Leave 2nd to final coat overnight to "Harden" Apply final coat in the best conditions possible Hope that helps

The fibreglass roof does not necessarily need a special gel paint. Plastic bumpers on cars and fibreglass cars such as lotus elises are not painted with gel paint and they flex all the same. Some eventually star crack but gel paint also does eventually.
Fibreglass boats can be painted in special gel paint but I doubt that you will need to use it on a pop top. Normal solvent based paint will do the job fine - if you are worried about it flexing use elasticiser in your paint/laquer so that the paint is more flexible.
My advice is to hurry up and get your paint bought as paint suppliers - especially in York are stopping the supply of solvent based paint because of EU regulations on solvent emissions.
The alternative will then be waterbased and I'm afraid you will not be able to paint a whole roof on a van if you do not have an oven where you can get the paint to 60-80 degrees F and a spray gun with stainless steel internals. Also if you are not confident it is very tricky with solvent based never mind water based. I suppose a pop top is high up and not usually inspected in detail but my recommendation is to remove it and get someone to paint it for you properly as it will be much cheaper for you in the long run.

Try Colin/Clive at Track Torque at Tockwith, he is a really good paint sprayer with a heated booth, 01423 359768, he sprayed the fibreglass body kit for Issy's Caravelle

Thanks guys for your help.
Hey I actually made it to the Royal Oak yesterday and well worth the trip. Any other lurkers get round there next time.
Some folks go for lunch and others like me turned up a little later just for a drink and a chat.
A good idea to deal with my paint job problem, it seems, if I want to do it myself, is to get an old panel and practice on it. Thanks for the suggestion keredwor.
