Just incase you are not aware.
If your generator bulb (in the dashboard) blows your alternator does not get a signal to charge your battery, when your engine is running. Your battery will drain until dead!
I found this out when the AA came out last Tuesday to my dead vw at the side of the B1264!!!
10p bulb fitted van now working again.
AA man was very knowledgable with the old vws and knew what it was within a few minutes. (after checking the alternator and wiring).
If you do end up with this problem you can quickly bridge the live and switch connector on your alternator to kick the charging system in.

Thats a bit odd cause my bulb was blown for ages (I know very dangerous running without warning lights) and my battery still charged...I do have a dynamo as opposed to an alternator though.

The alternator charging bulb acts as a sacrificial thermistor....with a Dynamo the charging circuit is different, normally through a relay and back to the commutator in the Generator

I had the exact same as Derek, when I first bought the van , the warning light didn't come on so you think everything is fine, untill you want to start your engine again, and nothing, so my local garage had a look at it after I charged the battery a few times and fiddled around with the warning light and VOILA... system worked again...simple but very important.
