You need to pay out 1200-1500 for a campaign with tax and test, 900-1000 for a series 2 with tax test, both will need work, prices are also slowly rising as I paid only £500 for mine with full MOT and 6 months tax, this was 5 years ago.
Rot wise mk1's, rear axle mount points, front inner arches, fuel filler and surround and under every wheel arch (as the plastic cover trap water/mud) the newest mk1's are now 26 years old, unless you find a City golf s/african import, these can still be found quite new.
Right then first i'll apologise for the lack of updates, i've been a tad busy doing "other stuff" i've done a few odd parts off the van over christmas and finally got back to the van itself last week, so watch this space........
